President Biden declared the COVID-19 pandemic over, but for many Americans inundated with government propaganda, COVID-19 still represents a real bodily threat. No declaration from a President will undo the damage that has occurred over the last two years. Community, culture, and trusted institutions have all suffered. Those individuals who believed COVID-19 represented this century’s Spanish Flu and those who simply wanted to be left alone all suffered equally.
The worldwide response to COVID-19 has been frightening.
It has been frightening for those who have bought into the fear generated by media and governments. It all started with inflated statistics coming out of China, coupled with breathless video propagated on social media depicting residents of Wuhan dropping dead in the streets. That never happened elsewhere, but it was seared into the collective consciousness and branded with a touch of reality when the World Health Organization (WHO) and other public health institutions began adopting and advocating for increasingly oppressive pandemic mitigation approaches. Why else would these trusted institutions endorse policies that risk so much economically, socially, and reputationally if there weren’t a crisis of global proportions?
Then came Neil Ferguson’s epically wrong predictions from Imperial College London. He predicted millions of deaths using a model which was subsequently and justly pilloried for its haphazard coding, built on data lacking real world empirical basis. His forecasts scripted a narrative that has proven difficult if not impossible to gracefully renounce. It wasn’t just the United Kingdom (UK) that adopted the prognostications of this hypocrite, the United States Government (USG) did as well.
Yes, objectively Neil Ferguson is a hypocrite.
