As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, the Biden Administration is doing everything it can to retain the power to issue mandates again. The Executive Office leads and the agencies and departments follow. They even put their intent to retain their power to mandate in writing. On 12 May 2023, the Deputy General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Katy Kale put out a public services announcement to her workforce.
She commented on President Biden’s 11 May cessation of the national public emergency, comforted them with the news that they could still seek counsel from the Safer Federal Workforce Taskforce (SFWTF), and thanked those that worked through the pandemic. The hybrid work model borne from the COVID panic, remained a work option as well.
She made sure to let the workforce know what wouldn’t change.
Some things will stay the same. We will continue to:
Display signs in our buildings directing you to go home if you’re feeling ill and to wipe down your work stations before and after use.
Monitor CDC data and guidance to determine if we need to return to more restrictive policies. The CDC has shifted its reporting of COVID-19 Community Levels to COVID-19 hospital admission levels, which will continue to be reported by county and with green, yellow, and orange status.
It may not seem like much, and the tone of the email is not threatening, but that is how managers ensure they can say they kept their employees informed. It is a clear indication that they have no intention of returning to a sane approach to seasonal endemic respiratory virus.

Worried Man Blues, Ralphn Stanley
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
I'm worried now, but I won't be worried long
I went across the river and I lay down to sleep
Went across the river and I lay down to sleep
Went across the river and I lay down to sleep
When I woke up, put the shackles on my feet
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
I'm worried now, but I won't be worried long
Twenty-nine links of chain around my leg
Twenty-nine links of chain around my leg
Twenty-nine links of chain around my leg
And on each link was the initial of my name
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
I'm worried now, but I won't be worried long
I asked the judge, what might be my fine
I asked the judge, what might be my fine
I asked the judge, what might be my fine
Twenty-one years on the Rocky Mountain Line
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
I'm worried now, but I won't be worried long
The train that I ride, is sixteen coaches long
The train that I ride, is sixteen coaches long
The train that I ride, is sixteen coaches long
The girl I love is on that train and gone
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
I'm worried now, but I won't be worried long
